Day One in China

4/4/2013
We started at 5:30am Wednesday and are ending at 9:00 pm on Thursday night....but not in two days....how does that work?! Fly half way around the world! :-) We are so thankful for all the prayers we know went up on our behalf today, because we truly felt the "peace that passes all understanding!" Other than having a hard time saying goodbye at the airport, we have been remarkably calm today. No real anxiety or nervousness - which I know is hard to believe, especially if you talked to one of us the past day or so. (I KNOW my mom can't believe it!! We'd still be sitting on our living room floor surrounded by all of our stuff if it wasn't for her!) Anyway, we want to thank everyone for their prayers and ask you to continue them, please! :-).

Everything has gone just according to plan today. (Except that I cant get the blog to connect...ugh!) We met up with our group and our guide, Tom, at the airport and went to our hotel. Traffic was awful, but it is a holiday the next few days, so they were expecting it. It is their annual Qing Ming (Tomb Sweeping) Festival, where they visit and clean the graves of their friends and family who have passed on. Interesting! We saw some neat buildings on the way, including one the locals call the "underpants" building! Because that's what it looks like! ;-) Beijing is known for its horrible air quality. The sky looks really gray and dingy and its a big stinky. I guess with 7-8 million people living in its downtown area alone it's bound to be like that. Tom said around 20 million people live in Beijing as a whole!

After Tom checked us in, we exchanged some money, found our room, freshened up, and left for a quick bite to eat. The boys will be proud of us....our first meal in China was at.....McDonalds! We have one just down the block from our hotel, and we just wanted something quick before going back, unpacking a little, and going to bed. We did go by ourselves, though, so we were pretty proud of ourselves (even if we did order with numbers)! Well, goodnight for today....or tonight....who knows! How about, good night for now! ;-)
